Box Hill: boom-era houses, post-war streets and a skyline
Box Hill boomed in the 1880s, with numerous subdivisions and some mansions, then grew fastest of all after the Second World War. Full restorations lead our Box Hill tally since 2021: 9 full roof restorations and 4 roof repairs, as at September 2026.
Building materials were made close by. The Standard Brickworks (c1884) sat near Surrey Park, and the old Wunderlich/Monier terracotta roof tile works in Mitcham is now on Whitehorse council's heritage list.
In 1954 Box Hill was named one of five district centres for metropolitan Melbourne, and today its centre has some of Melbourne's tallest buildings outside the CBD. Around the towers, though, the streets of houses carry on, and that's where I work: re-bedding ridges, fixing valleys and bringing tired roofs back.

What wears out on Box Hill roofs
On boom-era, Edwardian and post-war houses, these are the usual faults:
Ridge and hip mortar cracked right along the roof, with caps working loose
Concrete and terracotta tiles faded, chalky or porous after decades
Rusted valley irons that start leaking in heavy rain
Cracked tiles from old antennas, solar installs or foot traffic
Gutters and downpipes rusted at the joins or pulled away
Leaks where a later extension joins the original roof
By this age the faults tend to arrive together, which is why full restorations make up most of my Box Hill work. When a repair will do, I'll say so.

Is it worth restoring an old roof in Box Hill?
If the tiles are still solid, usually yes. A restoration adds around 12 to 15 years for far less than a new roof. If they're cracking right across the roof, I'll tell you a replacement is the better spend.

Do you only do full restorations?
