Roof Restoration & Repairs Templestowe

Templestowe swapped orchards for houses from the 1960s, many in the light brick of the day. Many are now 50-plus years old. I'm Ryan, a qualified tiler with two decades on Melbourne roofs.

Templestowe: orchard country turned 1960s suburb

Templestowe was orchard country, and orcharding reached its peak in the 1920s and 1930s. Since 2021, as at September 2026, we've completed 4 full roof restorations and 2 roof repairs in Templestowe.

From the 1960s, houses replaced the orchards. Project builders put up display homes in the then fashionable light-coloured brick, on streets laid out to follow the hills. Some of those display homes now make up a heritage precinct of their own.

Hills and big gums bring their own problems: leaves in the valleys, moss on shady faces, and roofs that are hard to see from the street, so faults go unnoticed. Parts of Templestowe also sit in a Bushfire Management Overlay, which makes clear gutters matter even more.

Hills and gums

What goes wrong on Templestowe roofs

On 1960s and 70s homes among the hills and gums, these are the usual faults:

  • Concrete tiles that have lost their coating and hold moss on the shady side

  • Ridge pointing cracked and falling out after 50-odd years

  • Valleys and gutters packed with gum leaves and bark

  • Tiles cracked by falling branches

  • Leaks around skylights, flues and later extensions

  • Gutters sagging where water has sat in them for years

Restorations have been most of my Templestowe work, because by this age the whole roof tends to need attention at once.

I had a small leak that only showed in certain rain. Ryan came out a few times and after our last heavy rain he found it and fixed it at a very good price. Great to deal with a tradesman who replies and turns up on time.

FAQ

Templestowe roof FAQs

My house is from the 1970s. Restore or replace?

If the tiles are sound, restore. Concrete tiles from that era usually are; it's the coating and pointing that have worn out. A restoration adds around 12 to 15 years for a fraction of the cost of a new roof.

How often should I clear my gutters with all these gums?

At least twice a year, and before summer if you're near bushland. Gum leaves and bark block gutters and valleys fast, and that's where leaks start.

What's the price of a roof restoration in Templestowe?

The usual range is $4,000 to $7,500 for a full restoration, based on a 180 to 220mยฒ tile roof. Large or steep roofs cost more, and I inspect and quote for free.

Is my house in a heritage precinct?

A few Templestowe precincts are, including the former Merchant Builders display houses and Rosco Drive. Check your address on VicPlan before you change a roof's colour.

Which suburbs near Templestowe do you cover?
