Roof Restoration & Repairs Montmorency

Montmorency was small rural landholdings when its Presbyterian church went up in 1917. Since 2021 we've completed 5 full roof restorations and 3 roof repairs here, as at September 2026.

The real building came after World War II and ran through to the 1970s, on sites chosen for their views. So many Montmorency homes are 50 to 75 years old, with a few mud brick houses near the Eltham border.

Hills and gardens mean shade, leaves and moss. Roofs on the shady side stay damp longer, gutters fill quickly and valleys block. That's where trouble usually starts on a roof like this.

On post-war homes on sloping, leafy blocks, these are the usual faults:

• Moss and lichen spreading on shady faces and holding water against the tiles

• Gutters and valleys blocked by leaves, then overflowing in heavy rain

• Ridge pointing cracked and falling out on 50-year-old roofs

• Tiles cracked by falling branches

• Leaks around chimneys, skylights and later additions

• Faded concrete tiles gone porous after decades without a coat

Restorations are most of my Montmorency work, because on a roof this age everything tends to wear out together. I'll tell you honestly if a repair will do.

Moss does more than look untidy. It holds water against the tiles, lifts their edges and works its roots into porous concrete. Scraping it off doesn't last.

On a restoration we pressure clean the roof with a 3,500 PSI Jetblaster, then treat it with a sterilising lichen wash so the growth doesn't come straight back. The membrane coats that follow seal porous tiles, which leaves moss less to grip.
