Roof Repairs & Restoration Brunswick

Brunswick was sold as farm lots in 1839, and by the 1920s nearly all the subdivisions were completed. Our jobs here since 2021 number 10 roof repairs and 2 full roof restorations, as at September 2026.

Bricks shaped the place: most of its parks are filled-in quarry holes, and the 1880s and 1890s lined the streets with modest brick terraces and single-fronted weatherboards. Iron roofing has a long history here too, back to a row of iron cottages from about 1854 in Brunswick Road.

Since 1945 some streets have been rebuilt with flats, but dozens of Heritage Overlay precincts, like the Brickworks Housing Precinct, protect the older ones. On a heritage terrace, repairs that keep the roof looking the same are usually the right call.

On Victorian terraces, weatherboard cottages and later homes, these are the usual culprits:

• Rusted iron at the laps, the nail holes and the lower edge where water sits

• Parapet flashings on terraces that have cracked or pulled away from the wall

• Loose ridge capping on iron roofs, and cracked mortar on tile ones

• Leaks where a rear addition or skillion meets the original roof

• Rotted or rusted gutters at the back of narrow blocks

• Old patches and silicone repairs that have failed

Most are repair jobs, and repairs are the bulk of my Brunswick work. I find where the water really gets in before I fix anything.

On a terrace in a Heritage Overlay, the aim is a repair nobody notices from the street. That means matching profiles and colours, re-fixing sheets rather than replacing whole runs, and keeping original details like ridge capping and flashings.

If you want a new colour or a new roofing material, talk to council before you commit. Under the overlay rules, painting a surface that has never been painted needs a permit, and so do repairs that change how the house looks.
